Brief Introduction to Shenyang Ligong University

Shenyang Ligong University (SLU) was founded in 1948. Its predecessor was Northeast Military Special School, later upgraded to the new function and title of Shenyang Institute of Technology in 1960, and later evolved into a full university and was accordingly renamed Shenyang Ligong University in 2004. The university is located near the south bank of Hun River in the scenic Hunnan New Hi-Tech District, Shenyang City, with towering and elegant buildings and a pleasant campus environment.

Over more than sixty years of construction and development, SLU has developed from a single-discipline military and technological school into a multi-disciplinary university, well-known in engineering, with combination of concentrations in science, management, arts, economics, and law. With the distinctive features of national defense, SLU enrolls students on a nationwide basis, contributing to the development of Liaoning Province.

SLU covers a square area of 1,220,000 ㎡, with campus buildings 443,400㎡ and a total value of teaching and scientific equipment 260 million RMB. On campus, there is a local area network for internet access and many high-level modernized labs. Its library occupies an area of 39,000㎡ with 1,230,000 paper books in the collection, an automatic management system, and growing international database, meanwhile, its development plan of digitalizing the library is now underway.

SLU has 16 schools, 2 teaching departments, 12 first level and 45 second-level Master’s degree programs, 7 Master’s-accredited fields for engineering and the MBA degree. It offers 51 undergraduate programs. It has 9 provincial level key disciplines and preponderant and characteristic disciplines, 1 Sino-Russian Scientific and Technological Cooperation Base, 1 National Key Lab for 863 Plan, 1 key science and technology platform, 16 provincial and ministerial level key laboratories and engineering and technology research centers. SLU has a Weapon Museum which is the sole in northeast China and is named by China Association for Science and Technology as National-level base for science education.

SLU has 1728 teaching faculty members, with 1061 full-time teachers, of whom 546 are professors and associate professors, 220 with a doctorate degree, 1 national achievement outstanding teacher, 9 provincial achievement outstanding teachers, 1 “new century talent” awarded by Ministry of Education, 3 provincial outstanding experts, 4 provincial distinguished professors, 6 under the program of “Supporting Outstanding Talents in Science and Technology” and 10 teachers under the provincial “Outstanding Young Scholar Growth Plan”, 15 at the hundred-level of the “Ten Million Talent Project”, 21 with special grants from the State Council and 10 Ph. D supervisors.

SLU has 35,533 students, among whom 1,613 are postgraduates, and 25,614 of whom are full-time undergraduates. Over the past more than sixty years since its establishment, SLU has cultivated over 100,000 talents in various fields for the country. In 2010, SLU was approved by Ministry of Education to enroll high-level football team.

SLU has established stable cooperation with 65 universities in eleven countries, such as Russia, the United States, Britain, Canada, Germany, Japan, and Finland. Four advanced laboratories were built with nine institutes from the National Academy of Sciences of Russia and Belarus. SLU has conducted joint programs with universities in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Russia and other countries. Confucius Institute has been established based on the cooperation with Tomsk State University in Russia, meanwhile, the cooperation between the two universities is also extended with the opening up of the Pushkin Russian Language Center, which was approved by the Ministry of Education of China as a national Russian center.

Sixty-five years has witnessed the many changes and growth of Shenyang Ligong University. With full enthusiasm, innovative and enterprising spirit, SLU is striving ahead to elevate itself to be a high-level teaching and research university, with distinctive features, domestically well-known, and distinguished as a first-echelon university in Liaoning Province.

Introduction to School of International Education

The School of International Education (SIE) is the school specialized in teaching Chinese to international students and overseas Chinese in SLU. SIE holds the motto “Spread Chinese language worldwide as a bridge for international friendship”. Since its founding, SIE has trained more than 3000 students from over 10 countries like Korea, Japan, America, Mongolia, Germany, Finland, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Indonesia.

As the China’s international influence grows, and the extent of its foreign exchanges and cooperation broadens, the official Chinese language becomes more and more important to international communication, as well as to guiding toward deeper levels of. In order to respond appropriately to the evolving appreciation and familiarity with China and Chinese culture, SIE likewise strives to continue to learn and evolve to meet the demand for Chinese language learning, seeking, in the process, to develop its own distinctive achievement and reputation as a center for Chinese language study.

After many years’ development and construction, SIE has developed a skilled teaching team of 6 full-time teachers at the Master’s degree level, all TCSL certified. Through close study and discussion, our teachers have obtained deep familiarity, expertise and experience with our teaching system, content and methods. Colorful course contents and various teaching methods are warmly welcomed by students. Thanks to the growing prestige of our reputation, the number of international students has only increased in recent years.

In order to satisfy international students’ learning needs toward fully penetrating Chinese language and culture, using specific teaching targets, SIE sets various classes and selects the appropriate texts, while carefully arranges schedules and activities to best match the resources at the disposal of the university with the needs of the program and its students. The course set is of excellent quality, not only including grammar, spoken Chinese, listening comprehension and reading, but also evolving praxis courses that give special attention to video-audio comprehension training, practical listening and speaking skills, and rhetorical performance.

SIE has good study conditions and good accommodations. There is advanced language lab, video-audio classroom, multi-media classroom, activity room and reading room. In class, teaching software programs and multi-media are used at timers to enhance the learning environment. As for student housing accommodations, the hotel staff manages standard 3-star-quality rooms with full facilities, western-style bathrooms and an independent first-floor restaurant.

To enrich students’ spare time, SIE arranges numerous cultural field trips, exchanges, sports and entertainment competitions, as well as other forms of language practice and cultural events. International students can appreciate and get a feel for Chinese culture and society for themselves. SIE has many “second classroom” courses, like Chinese calligraphy, painting, tea culture, Taiji Chuan (sometimes called “shadow boxing”, Chinese opera and paper-cutting, and other traditional cultural practices. International students can not only study the language and traditions of China from this base, but also learn more deeply about the contemporary national economic development, history and the continuing adaptive sense of culture, as well.

As for daily management, the teachers are keen to balance a challenging regimen with enjoyment. In order to help international students to have a good life here, SIE set the master teacher system, that is, each teacher has the responsibility for one or two classes to help solve students’ problems, to improve the communication between teacher and students, and thus to ensure SIE can be a harmonious family.
